II.2.4) Description of the procurement:

By the purchase of a VivaCT 80 scanner with an image resolution of 10 μm, it is possible to image mice and rats while alive, so changes in bone microstructure can be followed over time. This excellent feature is unique for VivaCT 80 scanner and allows quantifying the actual amount of bone formed and removed in contrast to traditional methods. Another important advantage of this instrument is that in vivo μCT reduces the number of animals needed for a biomedical experiment, as the same animal can be investigated at several time points. Due to the complexity of bone, e.g. the combination of many cell lines in bone maintenance and the interplay with other organs, it is essential to be able to conduct studies in animals and to follow the impact of growth, intervention, or disease in vivo.

We already have a μCT 35 from Scanco Medical, and the 2 scanners can be clustered for automatic workload distribution and sharing of disk space. Furthermore, we have a range custom-made software for the μCT 35, which will enable analyses of data from the VivaCT 80 scanner. In addition, the VivaCT 80 scanner can share software for analysis with our μCT 35 scanner, thus ensuring full interoperability between the scanners.

  • The procurement falls outside the scope of application of the directive
Explanation:

Aarhus University wants to buy a VivaCT 80 scanner. AU has series of in-house developed software written especially for this instrument only.

In order to ensure clustering, and adaption into existing software and hardware frame-works, only Scanco Medical AG is able to deliver the system that meets these needs without adding significant time and cost to software development and long-term increase in maintenance costs.
