Scope:

DALO has estimated its requirements regarding purchase volume and service level and kindly asks the potential contractor to consider this information when completing the request for information (RFI).

DALO expects to purchase 4 canine tactical first aid simulation models.

Concept of operation:

The Danish Armed Forces deploy on a regular basis Military Working Dogs (MWD) worldwide in missions.

Due to their working profile, they have a high risk profile regarding injuries.

Studies show that the life-threatening injuries the MWD incurs typically are gunshot wounds (GSW), blasts with or without shrapnel’s and hyperthermia.

Besides that, there are many minor injuries of a non-life-threatening character the MWDs can inure.

During deployment, veterinary assistance is typically not an option – best case one or more flying-hours away, worst case not existing.

Especially during a tactical operation, is it exclusively the patrol members and their skills that can address and ensure treatment of a wounded MWD.

The Danish Medic Command and the dog school at the Operative Support Wing (OSW) have for several years trained and educated dog handlers in tactical first aid for MWD. We have been working and training on cadavers and available simulation models.

The outcome of the skills training depends upon the realistic features of the simulation capacities. This is stated both by human and veterinary research.

In recent years, very realistic canine simulation models for skills training have been developed. These have injury profiles and multiple scenarios adapted for traumas and injuries in battle situations.

It is of great importance that our dog handlers and MWD medics can be prepared best way possibly in regards to threating an injured MWD. One of the keys to that is training on highly skilled tactical first aid canine simulation models.
